The Technical Award in the Decorative/Display Category honors a wall calendar that showcases Hazen Paper’s design, converting and metallizing capabilities. Produced completely in-house, the coated-two-side, 0.010 paperboard calendar features 10 transfer-laminated holographic patterns and demonstrates the potential for producing packaging for multiple stock-keeping units on a single sheet.

The Technical Award in the Other Category went to Hazen Paper for a striking Driven 2 Design postcard promotion sent to attendees at the HOW Conference 2011. Color Logic provided the design, while Hazen Paper supplied the substrate, metallizing and converting.  The 12-point Foiljet Digital paperboard is coated on two sides with a proprietary coating, certified for printing on HP Indigo digital presses. Billed as the first HP Indigo-certified transfer-metallized substrate, the material also is easily recycled because metal content is extremely low and there’s no film layer.

Hazen Paper swept the Decorative/Display Category. The Marketing Award recognizes a holographic cover for a Collector’s Edition Program for Super Bowl XLV. Hazen created the custom holographic image and embossed it onto transfer film that was coated in-house. Hazen then metallized the transfer holographic material and transfer-metallized the coated-two-side, 100-pound stock. The final step involved sheeting and printing the 19 x 36-inch sheets in register with the holography.

Hazen Paper captured the Technical Award in the Healthcare, Cosmetics and Toiletries Packaging Category for an upscale carton for the retail introduction of a premium gel nail polish. The carton structure for Nutra Nail Gel Perfect Polish consists of coated-one-side, 18-point SBS, laminated in register with metallized, custom holographic, 60-gauge polyester. Hazen Paper’s two-channel Ultracure acrylic-lacquered custom hologram pattern #1-6 Kleido-Burst adds depth and draws eyes to the product.  

Judges Comments

With both circular and ray holographic patterns, the judges felt this package presents a unique sparkle and would look active on store shelves. “A well-thought-out design,” they agreed.

In the Nonfood Packaging Category, Hazen Paper Co., Holyoke, Massachusetts, captured the Marketing Award. Hazen Paper served as the substrate supplier and metallizer for a holographic slip case for the Elvis 75^th Anniversary DVD Collection from Warner Home Video, Burbank, California. The slip case wrap consists of 60-gauge custom holographic mPET laminated to 80-pound, coated-one-side litho/label paper from Hazen. A two-/three-dimensional Holo-Lens insert adds a security feature. The custom hologram, a repeating pattern of the name Elvis, reflects the persona of the star as well as the integrity and pizzazz of the brand. The litho/label stock exhibits excellent lay-flat and stay-flat characteristics to support faster printing and die-cutting speeds and the PET helps prevent score cracking.

Hazen also won a Technical Award in the Decorative Display Category for a magazine insert publicizing its custom holographic capabilities and sustainable practices. Hazen served as designer, substrate supplier, metallizer, and converter for the Rose Among Thorns insert. The 10-point, coated-two-side paper features a custom, transfer-metallized hologram overprinted in four-color process plus opaque white. A UV coating protects the front and back of the page. Transfer metallizing helps the relatively lightweight insert lay flat because it permits moisture gain and loss on both sides of the sheet.

Hazen Paper was awarded the Marketing Award for the holographic cover designed, embossed, metlalized, and laminated by Hazen Paper for Super Bowl XLIV Exclusive Stadium Collection Edition program from H.O. Zimman, Inc in Lynn, MA.  The custom hologram, featuring the Vince Lombardi Trophy, was transfer metalllized to 100-pound coated-two-side paper, which was then coated inline with acrylic.

Eye catching packaging for the Beyoncé ‘Pulse’ perfume collection has won the International Hologram Manufacturers Association’s (IHMA) award for the exceptional use of a hologram or holographic material for decorative and promotional purposes.

Hazen Paper Company, Curtis Packaging and Coty Inc, USA, picked up the ‘Best Applied Decorative Product’ award for a holographic-based solution which seamlessly wraps all the panels of the box to create a 3D burst effect focused on the product name. The hologram is partly over-printed in a radiant purple so that shafts of silver holographic light radiate from Beyoncé Pulse. The packaging comes in eight different sizes and in a windowed boxed set which features the un-printed hologram on the back internal wall of the pack to highlight the products in front of it.

The award was presented at Holopack•Holo-print®, The Holography Conference, in Las Vegas, Nevada in November.

As metallizer and converter for the box, Hazen metallized 48-gauge polyester coated inline with Ultracure acrylic lacquer and laminated it to 0.018 SBS using a water-based adhesive. The silver film provides a brilliant base for the final rich gold background color and holographic stamping.

Hazen Paper laminates Ultracure lacquered Rainbow 80-gauge OPP to the coated side of 0.024 SBS using a water-based adhesive. The holographic rainbow material provides a backdrop for the subtle nighttime scene pictured and imparts a multi-dimensional appearance.

The heavy caliper paperboard not only protects the contents during distribution, but also is transfer-metallized on the uncoated side to provide a gold backdrop for a 750-milliliter bottle of Crown Royal and two glasses.  Previous designs used a 48-gauge polyester/foil/paperboard insert, which had to be manually positioned.  Replacing the film/paperboard laminate with transfer-metallized paperboard cuts material consumption by nearly one-third, requires substantially less metal, and increases production rates by eliminating hand-loading of the insert.

In the Healthcare, Cosmetics and Toiletries Packaging Category, Hazen Paper Co., Holyoke, Massachusetts, receives the Marketing Award for a family of holographic set-up boxes for Elizabeth Arden, New York, New York. This year’s gift box design for the Mediterranean and Red Door brands relies on bright Ultracure acrylic-lacquered Holographic Circles laminated to the coated side of 18-point solid bleached sulfate with water-based adhesive. The eye-catching holographic images shift from circles to diamonds depending on the viewer’s perspective, encouraging the shopper to pick up the box. The box base also relies on metallized PET in red or blue to coordinate with the lid and add an additional level of sparkle. Hub Folding Box provides both design and contract packaging services for the project.

Hazen Paper Company, Holyoke, Massachusetts, swept the Cosmetics Category, capturing both the Marketing and Technical Awards.

The Marketing Award in the Cosmetics Category honors a holographic set-up box for a Provocative Woman gift pack from Elizabeth Arden, New York, New York. As the converter, Hazen laminates 48-gauge rainbow holographic polyester, metallized by Spectratek Technologies, Inc., Los Angeles, California, to the coated side of 20-point SBS using water-based adhesive. Hazen also coats the film with its Ultracure acrylic lacquer. Hub Folding Box, Mansfield, Massachusetts, served as package designer and contract packager and also enhanced the strength and appearance of the box with 48-gauge reflective silver, metallized polyester film on the inside. The criss-cross effect of the rainbow and overall black print on the exterior provide an eye-catching presentation under the high-intensity lighting found at cosmetics counters in department stores.
